"Our son attended two sessions at Lothlorien this past summer and fall. It was such a wonderful experience for him!
He has multiple disabilities including the inability to walk or talk. Our son has difficulty maintaining a sitting position for any length of time.
During his first class he sat on the horse with moderate assistance for 15 minutes. The following week, much to our complete surprise and delight, he rode for 45 minutes. By the third class he was sitting perfectly on the horse for the entire hour with no physical assistance!
Lothlorien proved to be an amazing program for him. In addition to building his endurance, the staff was wonderful with encouraging him to use his sign language during class. He learned to sign "walk on" and "whoa" to command his horse. The staff is wonderful and obviously love what they do. Whenever any one mentions Lothlorien to him, even though it has been several months since the sessions ended, he gets very excited! We would highly recommend this program to anyone with a special-needs child!"
Thank you for your interest in participating Lothlorien’s Therapeutic Riding Program. We are looking forward to the start of this year’s program, and welcome both new and returning riders to another great year of therapeutic riding!
Use the links at left to download information and registration forms for 2008 sessions. These forms must be completed and returned to the office prior to receiving a schedule for your/your child’s lessons. Note that new riders also need to participate in a screening prior to the start of the first session for which they are registered.
Rider screenings are necessary to ensure proper class placement, horse, tack, and adaptive selection. Once all completed forms are received in our office, you will be contacted to schedule a time for a client screening. Riders who began riding in our program prior to 2004 will be able to have their screenings updated by phone.
Sarah Pictor, PT, DPT, PCS and other community therapists will be conducting the screenings. For your convenience, we will have dates available at either D’Youville College or at Lothlorien. The screening will take approximately 30 minutes and is designed to eliminate taking up lesson time for this process.
2008 sessions will again be six weeks in length. The first session begins February 25, 2008; the last ends on November 8, 2008. Please refer to the session schedule on the registration forms for more details. (Please note that again this year we are asking you to identify your preferred days and times, rather than the times you are NOT available.)
We continue again this year to schedule riders in classes with riders of similar abilities, ages and goals.
Our mission at Lothlorien is to develop the highest potential in equine activities. Each year we offer the opportunity to all students to demonstrate their skills and compete in our Student Horse Show. This year's show will be held on Sunday, July 29, 2007; registration is $10.00 per riders.
Prior to the Horse Show, instructors will help students prepare by introducing and practicing the following:
Lothlorien's Student Horse Show is always a fun, family-oriented event for both competitors and spectators. We encourage all our riders to participate.
We invite clients/caregivers to participate in the following opportunities to learn more about the therapeutic benefits of all equine assisted activities and improve your/your child’s experience at our center.
Please contact the office (716.655.1335, extension 101) for information about upcoming orientations.
